Moulsecoomb Forest Garden is a precious space where people come together and are accepted and cherished as individuals. In this project we considered the connection between collective wellbeing and nature. It’s rooted in the understanding that mental health, like physical health, fluctuates continuously and requires upkeep, just like a garden needs care and nurture.
The work was on display on Brighton Beach for the duration of Brighton Photo Fringe, and remains installed on Moulsecoomb Railway Station Bridge as a public artwork.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary year, the garden was founded by a group of friends who took over a derelict strip of council land. The project is now an important green urban space, connecting people with gardening, food, and nature, with inclusivity and diversity at its heart.
Offering horticulture, carpentry, woodland management, cooking, educational and social opportunities to everyone, the project engages young people from within and outside mainstream education, with outdoor activities and therapeutic support, eco-therapy and outdoor lessons complementing the school curriculum. Moulsecoomb Forest Garden offers particular support to young people with learning difficulties.
